Introduction

The wines from Alessandro and Gian Natale Fantino fly under most Piedmont collectors' radar, largely because they really only became commercially available in the mid-1990s. Prior to that, Alessandro served as the enologist and vinicultural manager for Cantina Bartolo Mascarello. Alessandro was responsible for producing the wines for Bartolo from 1978 to 1997, helping to create some of the legends we are drinking today.

“In 1997 he joined his brother Gian Natale in taking care of their family vineyards and focused solely on their winery.”

Brothers in Arms

The family vineyards are located just north of Monforte, with the majority located in the legendary Cru of Bussia in the sub section of Dardi. The brothers are lucky to have some extremely old vines to work with; the majority of their vines were planted in 1946 and 1947. The wines tend to be extremely long-lived, and are known for their subtlety once their tannins fade. The winemaking unsurprisingly is traditional here, employing longer fermentations and mostly large neutral Slovenian oak Botti, with a few neutral barriques for certain wines. In addition to their top wines Cascina Dardi and Cascina Dardi Riserva Barolos, they also produce beautiful Barbera d’Alba from these old vines. The Barbera is a show stopper, with lush fruit, bright acidity, and wonderful savory notes.
