Introduction
Long regarded as the most important estate in modern day Piedmont, the house of Conterno first bottled their Barolo in 1920. At that time, it was common practice for Barolo to be sold in cask and was generally consumed early. With the choice of bottling, the Conterno name became synonymous with quality, ageability, and Barolo itself. The Monfortino bottling followed shortly after, and the rest is history. The estate was then guided by Giacomo and his son Giovanni for the following 80 years with an eye to quality, vineyard management, and wines that speak to place.
Piedmont Secrets
In 1974, Giovanni acquired the Cascina Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba – a site with perfect exposure and the soil composition to make powerful, ageable wines. At that point, Giovanni stopped purchasing grapes. They had roughly nine hectares of Nebbiolo and could produce both Monfortino and Cascina Francia Barolo from their estate vineyards, as well as five hectares of Barbera in Cascina Francia that became one of the best-kept secrets in Piedmont.
Today, the estate is overseen by Roberto, Giovanni’s son who in 2008 purchased land in the Cerretta vineyard as well as in other sites in Serralunga including Rionda, Gabutti and Arione (adjacent to Cascina Francia). There have been small changes over the years at the winery and in the vineyards: meticulous vineyard maintenance and an expanded winery able to handle the production to Roberto’s standards. However, much has remained the same as it was 100 years ago, with large neutral botti, extended macerations, and extended bottle aging still the norm. These wines are timeless, a true icon of Italian wine.
