Introduction

For a very long time, the wines from Dönnhoff flew under the radar. Riesling in general took a back seat for many collectors, with only the some aware of the magic that happens when the sweet wines have bottle age. Thanks to the likes of Weingut Keller, Egon Muller, and many others, the collector market has awoken to the possibility of great Riesling. The wines from the Dönnhoff family certainly belong in that category. The family has been quietly farming and producing some of the most compelling from Germany, now considered a guiding light in their home region of the Nahe.

Riesling

Bottling their own wines since the 1920s, the history of the area as a wine growing region dates back to the mid 18th century. Thanks in large part to the work of the Dönnhoff family, sites like Oberhäuser Brücke and Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle are now considered to be among the top Riesling sites in Germany. The winemaking is mostly traditional, with the grapes pressed immediately following harvest, in order to retain focus, freshness, and acidity. They are then fermented in either (or both) large German casks or stainless steel, using natural yeasts for fermentation.

Over the last decade, control has moved between generations. With Helmut’s passing, the reigns have gone to his son, Cornelius, inviting a slight shift in style. The GG wines are less powerful and have a more focused lift now, while the sweet wines are even more concentrated and dense. These wines will almost certainly outlive any collector’s ability to hold them and are some of the best values one can find.
