Introduction
Located in the town of Tadten, not far from the Hungarian border, Sattler is now run by the fourth generation of the family, Erich Sattler. Outside of some changes in the vineyards, he has kept the estate consistent with previous generations.
“Erich’s goal is to produce red wines of concentration but with soft tannins.”
With a focus on both St Laurent and Zweigelt, Erich’s goal is to produce red wines of concentration but with soft tannins. The vineyards, some more than 40 years old, are planted predominantly in gravel. He harvests by hand, with the “classic” wines de-stemmed, fermented in stainless steel, and put through a six month elevage in a combination of steel and large neutral oak casks. For the “reserve” wines, fermentation is done in large neutral open-top wood vats with manual punch-downs. An elevage in used small barrels for the St Laurent, and new small oak barrels for the Zweigelt.
