Introduction
There is a fine line between decadence and laser-like finesse. The wines of Willi Schaefer walk that line, with a crystalline focus that seems next to impossible. The wines drink beautifully when young, but have the ability to age as well as any from Riesling.
“A crystalline focus that seems next to impossible.”
The village of Graach is home to some of the best sites in the Mosel. This is where Chrisoph Schaefer and his wife Andrea own their estate on a tiny 4.2 hectares, which also happen to include some of the best parcels in both Domprobst and Himmelreich. Their style perfectly reflects the village, with winemaking the same as in previous generations and a harvest based on taste, not analytics. The wines have cooler tones than Wehlen or Zeltingen, with Domprobst showing restrained mineral and smoke, while Himmelreich is louder, floral, and accessible from its youth.
